Nelmar Terrace

While one of the smaller neighborhood associations, Nelmar Terrace maintains its original 1913 boundaries. These boundaries are naturally formed by water on the east, San Marco Avenue to the west, Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind to the north, and both sides of May Street to the south. The neighborhood features "old fashioned sidewalk and front porch" character where residents look out for one another. A distinctive canopy of live oaks and a row of palms along Nelmar Avenue ending at a waterfront pocket park define the area's setting.

Development occurred between 1913 through the 1920s Florida Boom Period and again post-World War II. The neighborhood contains houses representing Mediterranean Revival, Georgia Colonial Revival, Dutch Colonial Revival, Craftsman/bungalow, and Moorish Revival styles, including the Moorish Revival pink castle on May Street. Former prominent St. Augustine residents lived here. In 2011, the neighborhood received National Register Historic District designation based on its architecture and residents' community importance.

The Nelmar Terrace Neighborhood Association works hard to not only protect this beautiful old neighborhood from non-residential encroachment but to strengthen the friendships within the neighborhood through social events.

The Board is elected at the Annual General Meeting, a potluck dinner held in fall. The Board meets quarterly to discuss upcoming events and "on demand" for zoning or other neighborhood issues.
